Abandonment issues are common and can be debilitating. To beat them, you’ll need to take a few steps. Here’s how!
Let yourself feel.
The first step to overcoming abandonment issues is to allow yourself to feel.
You can’t move forward until you process your grief. It can be painful to feel abandoned, but you must process these emotions. If you try to hide your feelings, they will come out eventually — and probably in a much more destructive way than if they were allowed expression when they were fresh and new.
Allow yourself time alone, and try not to compare your life with others’. Comparing yourself with others will only lead you down a road of self-loathing and misery that may seem impossible to escape from.
Talk to someone and get help.
This is the most important part of overcoming abandonment issues. You need to talk about what happened, how you feel and what you want from your life going forward.
Common sources of support include:
- A friend or family member — Your loved ones are the people who will be there for you when no one else is. If talking to them doesn’t work for some reason or another, then try someone else on this. They’re all good options.
- Your doctor — This can be especially helpful if they have experience with mental health concerns like depression and anxiety disorders (which usually accompany abandonment issues). If not, then maybe try another doctor until you find one who knows what they’re doing.
- A therapist/counselor/support group — These services are designed specifically for people dealing with abandonment issues so they should have plenty of helpful advice to offer. Just remember that different therapists will have different approaches so don’t give up if one person isn’t right for you — there’s probably another way out there somewhere too.
